Meeting Minutes
The meeting was formally started with the recitation of Holy Quran by Engr. Dr. Jawwad Sami Ur Rahman, Assistant Professor BME. Engr. Prof. Dr. Tariq Javid (chair) welcome the PhD members. All the members showed satisfaction after the review of earlier meeting minutes and agreed on related aspects. The members discussed the research road map for the department in details and the summary of the discussion held is as follows.
There is a need to establish a research culture that includes all stake holders industry professionals, teachers (subject experts), laboratory instructors/engineers, and students. Dr. Syed Rizwan, Assistant Professor of Faculty of Eastern Medicine (FEM) shared his experience and research projects in-process by his team at FEM. He emphasized the need of passion in research and reaching out for the resources in HU and outside. The chair supported and shared recent research contributions of the BME dept., especially two research papers presentations by BE BME students and four poster presentations. All members appreciated the efforts and agreed to proceed in a similar fashion for both BS FST and BS Biotechnology programs as well.
Dr. Javed Hussain Umrani, Assistant Professor FST, shared the need of funded research projects that ultimately bring laboratory equipment and publications to the team, as the essential part of the research road map. He suggested that the chair should enforced a deadline for submission of project proposals for recent openings and monitor the progress. The point is supported by Dr. Ashfaque Ahmed, Assistant Professor FST, who also added the need of MoUs with national industry and foreign HEIs. At this point in time, the chair shared recent MoU with MUET on Wednesday 07 December 2022 and encourage members for public-private collaborative research projects proposals development and submission.
Dr. Syeda Taskeen Fatima Rizvi, Assistant Professor Biotechnology commented to have a research profile summary for every PhD member of the team. This was a valid point and require efforts on behalf of the research team members to develop an inter-collaboration. Dr. Kinza Rafi, Assistant Professor FST showed the need of regular industrial visits for understanding of the problems and development of solutions for a win-win situation.
Dr. Hira Arsahd, Assistant Professor FST suggested the need to establish academia-academia linkages in addition to industry-academia linkages for each member of the team. Dr. Amer Nazir, Assistant Professor FST, Dr. Naved Hussain, Assistant Professor FST, and Ms. Rabab Zehra, Lecturer FST supported the suggestion. On the comment of Dr. Hira Arshad regarding laboratories for the Biotechnology program and especially the product development laboratory, Mr. Abdul Shakoor, Lecturer FST suggested to initially using food processing laboratory due availability of required laboratory equipment for the startup. The chair asked both FST and Biotechnology teams to plan a visit of the Department of Food Science and Technology, University of Karachi in coordination with FEST IRD and submit the indent for consideration and subsequent processing.
