BS Food Science and Technology Students at HU FEST Surprised Everyone with Innovative Food Products

It felt good when Dr Amer Nazir, Assistant Professor FST, invited me to Food Processing Lab to witness  and taste the food products developed by BS FST students. A number of groups, each with innovative product. The taste was good. I like all, however, few are mention here. Potato donuts, almond cookie, ice cream (two groups), garlic sauce, and many more. Few items were sent to VC office as well. Dean FEST, Dean FMHS, Dean FSSH, and Director QEC were delighted. I am sure, BE BME students of 4th and 8th semester were also amazed during their visit of the event. 

 

Dr Manzoor A Hashmani of UTP Malaysia Visited Hamdard University

Dr. Manzoor Ahmed Hashmani, Associate Professor and Data Science Cluster Head, Department of Computer and Information Sciences, University Technology Petronas (UTP), Malaysia visited Hamdard University Faculty of Engineering Sciences and Technology (HU FEST) on Thursday 15 December 2022. The faculty interaction was held at HU FEST conference room. Dr. Muhammad Faisal Khan, Associate Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, Hamdard University hosted the session. The main points of discussion include collaboration in research projects for industry. Dr. Hashmani shared his experience of working on industry grants and opportunities of collaborative research and development. HU FEST faculty members asked a number of questions relevant to their research. 

IU Team Visited HU FEST BME

A three members team from Iqra University (IU), North Campus visited Hamdard University Faculty of Engineering Sciences and Technology Department of Biomedical Engineering (HU FEST BME) at main campus Karachi. Team members from IQ team were Dr. Tooba Mehfooz, Dr. Muhammad Imran, and Ms. Tahira Tariq. After a brief introduction at Prof. Dr. Tariq Javid, Chairperson BME office, the team visited FST laboratories along with Dr. Hira Arshad and Dr. Amer Nazir. After the visit a detailed discussion session on academic matters was held. The team met Prof. Dr. M. Aamer Saleem, Dean FEST. An FDP session entitled, Malnutrition by Dr. Tooba Mehfooz was held at FEST Conference Room attended by the BME Food Science and Technology faculty members. Hamdard University and Mehran University of Engineering and Technology MoU

The MoU was signed by Vice Chancellors of HU and MUET at Jamshooro for collaboration in multiple venues of mutual interest. HU team includes Prof. Dr. Syed Shabib-ul-Hasan, Vice Chancellor HU, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Aamer Saleem, Dean FEST, Prof. Dr. Asadullah Larik, Dean FSSH, Prof. Dr. Tariq Javid, Chair Biomedical Engineering, and Dr. Asad Ali Zaidi, Chair Mechanical Engineering. HU team reached MUET at 11 am. A brief introduction session was held at the MUET VC office. After the visit of engineering departments and facilities; the lunch was served at foreign faculty hostel. The MoU signing session was held at VC conference room. HU team is thankful for the hospitality of MUET, especially the VC, three ex-VCs, and Deans of engineering faculties.

Meeting Minutes

The meeting was formally started with the recitation of Holy Quran by Engr. Dr. Jawwad Sami Ur Rahman, Assistant Professor BME. Engr. Prof. Dr. Tariq Javid (chair) welcome the PhD members. All the members showed satisfaction after the review of earlier meeting minutes and agreed on related aspects. The members discussed the research road map for the department in details and the summary of the discussion held is as follows. 

There is a need to establish a research culture that includes all stake holders industry professionals, teachers (subject experts), laboratory instructors/engineers, and students. Dr. Syed Rizwan, Assistant Professor of Faculty of Eastern Medicine (FEM) shared his experience and research projects in-process by his team at FEM. He emphasized the need of passion in research and reaching out for the resources in HU and outside. The chair supported and shared recent research contributions of the BME dept., especially two research papers presentations by BE BME students and four poster presentations. All members appreciated the efforts and agreed to proceed in a similar fashion for both BS FST and BS Biotechnology programs as well. 

Dr. Javed Hussain Umrani, Assistant Professor FST, shared the need of funded research projects that ultimately bring laboratory equipment and publications to the team, as the essential part of the research road map. He suggested that the chair should enforced a deadline for submission of project proposals for recent openings and monitor the progress. The point is supported by Dr. Ashfaque Ahmed, Assistant Professor FST, who also added the need of MoUs with national industry and foreign HEIs. At this point in time, the chair shared recent MoU with MUET on Wednesday 07 December 2022 and encourage members for public-private collaborative research projects proposals development and submission. 

Dr. Syeda Taskeen Fatima Rizvi, Assistant Professor Biotechnology commented to have a research profile summary for every PhD member of the team. This was a valid point and require efforts on behalf of the research team members to develop an inter-collaboration. Dr. Kinza Rafi, Assistant Professor FST showed the need of regular industrial visits for understanding of the problems and development of solutions for a win-win situation. 

Dr. Hira Arsahd, Assistant Professor FST suggested the need to establish academia-academia linkages in addition to industry-academia linkages for each member of the team. Dr. Amer Nazir, Assistant Professor FST, Dr. Naved Hussain, Assistant Professor FST, and Ms. Rabab Zehra, Lecturer FST supported the suggestion. On the comment of Dr. Hira Arshad regarding laboratories for the Biotechnology program and especially the product development laboratory, Mr. Abdul Shakoor, Lecturer FST suggested to initially using food processing laboratory due availability of required laboratory equipment for the startup. The chair asked both FST and Biotechnology teams to plan a visit of the Department of Food Science and Technology, University of Karachi in coordination with FEST IRD and submit the indent for consideration and subsequent processing. 

At the end, the chair thank all members.

On behalf of the organizing team, I am thankful to Mr. Muhammad Roshan Shah, CEO, Shah Scientific Solutions (http://www.shahscientificsolutions.com) for his visit to HU FEST as the Chief Guest, Invited Speaker for the seminar session. In addition, especial thank to the BME team (Engr. Dr. Muhammad Faris, Assistant Professor BME, Dr. Jawwad Sami Ur Rahman, Assistant Professor BME, and Dr. Maria Ali, Assistant Professor Biotechnology), Dr. Muhammad Faisal Khan, Associate Professor and Manager IRD, Engr. Adeel Khan, Lecturer EE, and Mr. Muhammad Naseem (HU FEST Admin Team) who despite time limitations, performed exceptionally well for the success of the event.

It was nice to see Mr. Syed Zeeshan Abdullah Qadri, one of adorable faculty member of our BS Food Science and Technology program at the exhibition. The exhibition participants were mostly related to the packaging of food items including pharmaceutical products, kitchen accessories, and processing for the food industry. I am especially thankful to Engr. Tayyab Ahmed Ansari, Assistant Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering; who is currently pursuing his PhD at UK, for his WhatsApp message.

HEC Council NAEAC AIC Team visited for BS Food Science and Technology Program Accreditation

Accreditation Inspection Committee (AIC) team of Higher Education Commission (HEC) National Agriculture Education and Accreditation Council (NAEAC) visited Hamdard University, Faculty of Engineering Sciences and Technology for accreditation of BS Food Science and Technology program. Additionally, there was an awareness session for both BS Biotechnology and BS Nutrition and Dietetics programs. 

HU BME Students at IBDC Conference

IBDC Conference Dates: November 22-23, 2022

HU BME students presented two conference papers and four poster papers at IBDC conference held at NED UET main campus organized by IEP. On second day, I was session co-chair for the technical session 4. On behalf of HU BME department, I am thankful to NED UET BME department for their tireless efforts in making a successful event to promote the Biomedical Engineering profession and Institute of Engineers Pakistan for organizing such marvelous events. 

PhD Thesis Defense Conducted for Mr. Muhammad Fahad

Hamdard University, Faculty of Engineering Sciences and Technology, Graduate School of Engineering Sciences and Information Technology organized the PhD thesis defense presentation and viva voce examination for Mr. Muhammad Fahad. On behalf of GEC members, I congratulate him and thankful to everyone who contributed.
