Visit of PCSIR Laboratories Complex, Karachi

Hamdard University Department of Biomedical
Engineering (HU BME) faculty members visited Pakistan Council of Scientific and
Industrial Research (PCSIR) Laboratories Complex, Karachi on Friday 13 December
2019. The visit was organized by the Industrial Relations Department of Faculty
of Engineering Sciences and Technology, Hamdard University. The faculty members
included Dr. Tariq Javid, Associate Professor & Chairman, Engr. Muhammad
Faris, Assistant Professor, Engr. Tayyab Ahmed Ansari, Assistant Professor, and
Engr. Ramsha Fatima, Lecturer. Dr. Uzma Rashid, Senior Scientific Officer and Chairperson
Protocol welcomed the faculty members along with Dr. Omer Mukhtar Tarar,
Technical Member, Certification Incentive Programme (CIP) for SMEs and Dr. Samee
Haider, Senior Scientific Officer from Food Technology and Nutrition Section. After
a short introduction from both sides, a brief discussion session was held in
Dr. Omer’s office. The main points included: a brief on PCSIR Laboratories
Complex setup across Pakistan and various services offered to scientific and industrial
organizations. The PCSIR Laboratories Complex, Karachi is a multidisciplinary
research complex having expertise in the disciplines of Marine and Food
Sciences, Environment, Bio-Sciences, Pharmaceuticals, Applied Chemistry and
Physics, Instrumentation, Material Science and Computers. Besides carrying out Research and Development
work in particular disciplines, it also provides analytical and technical
services as well as academic supervisory services. In the present scenario of
ISO and WTO, PCSIR Laboratories Complex Karachi is contributing by providing
quality testing services accredited under ISO / IEC-17025, to the Pakistani
manufacturers, exporters and importers. Later, HU BME faculty visited many
state-of-the-art laboratories at the PCSIR Laboratories Complex, Karachi to
witness excellent services in the form of various expensive testes underway on
submitted samples from industry. This followed by a detailed discussion session
on Hamdard University faculty and student visits, internships, and curriculum
for Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Technology. The PCSIR officers
assured their support, assistance and guidance in all related aspects. Surprisingly,
during the discussion session; a sample from Hamdard Laboratories was received
by Food Technology and Nutrition Section for analysis.

Hamdard University Department of Biomedical
Engineering (HU BME) faculty members visited the Department of Food Science and
Technology, University of Karachi (UoK FST) on Friday 13 December 2019. The HU
BME faculty included Dr. Tariq Javid, Associate Professor & Chairman and Engr.
Tayyab Ahmed Ansari, Assistant Professor. Dr. Rahman Siddiqi, Assistant
Professor UoK FST welcomed the HU BME faculty. After a brief introduction, a
detailed session was held at Dr. Rahman’s office. The discussion topics
included curriculum design for the Bachelor of Science in Food Science and
Technology program, laboratories, and library. Later on, the HU BME faculty
visited the library of the UoK FST department. Dr. Rahman assured his support,
assistance, and guidance on all related academic activities. He also
anticipated future collaborative research and development work in areas of
mutual interest.

Hamdard University Department of
Biomedical Engineering (HU BME) students of batches 2017 and 2018 visited Centre of
Innovation for Medical Education, Aga Khan University Hospital (AKU CIME) on
Thursday 05 December 2019. The industrial visit was organized by the Industrial
Relations Department (IRD), Faculty of Engineering Sciences & Technology,
Hamdard University, Karachi, Main Campus. The students were accompanied by
Engr. Dr. Tariq Javid, Associate Professor & Chairman, HU BME, Engr. Osama
Malik, Lecturer, HU BME, and Mr. Salman Shah, Assistant Professor, Department
of Computing. Dr. Perwez Hashmi, Advisor Administration, AKU CIME welcomed the
academia group. Dr. Hashmi presented an overview, purpose of AKU CIME,
simulation and modeling facilities, problem-based learning environment, and
other features of a unique setup of its own in Pakistan. The session included
interaction in the form of questions and answers. He appreciated the knowledge
demonstrated by HU BME students and preparation for the industry visit.
Furthermore, he guided students to gain the knowledge of best institutions
around the globe and their recent work. He also emphasized the need to develop industry
linkages and consistent efforts for adoption of new learning techniques. He
offered AKU CIME services for promotion of health education in professions
related to medical services. The tour of facilities were well coordinated and
supported by Mr. Ghulam Nabi, Marketing and Communications Analyst, Mr. Saleem
S. Pirani, Technical Specialist, and Mr. Darab Nisar Ahmed, Technical Analyst.
HU BME student were very excited and happy with the industrial visit as they
are now ready for their final year projects, many of which are linked directly
to the advanced instrumentations well explained by AKU CIME experts. Mr. Ghulam
Nabi told contribution of AKU CIME in promotion of healthcare education,
learning, teaching, and research. He also presented a brief on future aspects
of the marvelous setup. The tour was ended with a light lunch at the AKU CIME
cafeteria. The academia group then started their journey back to the Hamdard
University.
